Blessing of the Sea 2013

Since 1908, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain pays tribute to sailors lost at sea during the “Blessing of the Sea”. Strongly attached to this tradition, local people prepare this celebration for months; beyond the religious dimension, it is also a festive event with concerts, street shows, fireworks… During the “Blessing of the Sea”, the whole town and the fishing boats are embellished with paper roses of all colours…

Saturday 10th August – First day dedicated to religious ceremonies.

Mass in memory of sailors, lost at sea.

Procession from the church to the port.

Departure of the decorated fishing boats for a procession to the sea.

Concert in the church (Vivaldi music)

Torchlight  procession from 10 pm,  from the church to the “Vierge des Feux” at the top of the town.

Sunday 11th August – Festive day.

Concerts and shows to enliven streets: soundtracks, jazz “made in Normandy”, jugglers, sea stilters, street theatre, sailor songs

Children will also enjoy shows and a “mini fishing village” especially created for them!

At 10.15 pm, fireworks display to close the week-end…

But also…

During all the weekend, two exhibitions are also proposed. Discover the archipelago of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon (twinned with Port-en-Bessin-Huppain) and the life in a fishing boat (work spaces, living spaces…).

On Friday night, people embellish streets and boats with paper flowers. A moment that is not included in the programme, but a must to see…
